Sonesta Honors Martin Luther King Jr.

“If you can’t fly, then run; if you can’t run, then walk; if you can’t walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, he would have just celebrated his 87th birthday. He would have lived to see the country’s first African American President. And if the arc of history bent in the same direction it did last year, he would have lived to see the U.S. Navy commission a fleet of oil replenishment ships named for civil rights icons, an event that brought legendary activist and now-Congressman John Lewis to tears.

IMG_5284The Sonesta Collection was proud to honor MLK Day with commemorations large and small. At the Sonesta ES Suites Burlington Boston, employees brightened up the lobby with daisies that spanned the entire rainbow of colors, from blazing violet to forest green. Each daisy carried a message of inspiration from Dr. King, tied to the stem with a ribbon. “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase,” paraphrased one. It was a lovely remembrance and an inspiring way to remind everyone of his message.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, the Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island partnered with other area hotels and merchants to fund a full day of MLK Day activities, part of a weekend-long celebration of services, musical performances and banquets. The day began with a festive parade, followed by a gathering and ceremony at the high school’s Seahawk Cultural Center. After lunch at the school’s cafeteria, an inspiring evening reception took place at the All Saint’s Episcopal Church, where attendees enjoyed “Carry It On – A Musical Legacy,” a documentary chronicling the performances of Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan at the 1963 March on Washington.

The community events were a huge success in bringing awareness to the work and legacy of Dr. King. Sonesta was proud to help finance the day, providing delicious desserts and breads. It was a privilege to support such a busy and fulfilling weekend, and to help ensure that it unfolded smoothly at no cost to the community.
