The Royal Sonesta Harbor Court is proud to be a host hotel for the first-ever large-scale international light festival in the United States. The event was home-grown in Baltimore and promises a week of light-inspired art, music, innovation and an exciting exchange of ideas. It all takes place March 28 through April 3 at the city’s beautiful Inner Harbor, and beyond.
It’s fitting that Baltimore should host this inaugural event. The concept of manmade light in Charm City dates back to 1816—precisely 200 years ago. Back then, artist Rembrandt Peale had a creation he wanted to share with his associates, so he called them to his small Baltimore museum on a dark evening. In a flash, Peale lit up a room … not with a candle as they all expected, but with gas lamp. It wasn’t long before Baltimore became the first US city to light its streets using the same creation.
To commemorate the bicentennial, 28 large-scale original works of light art, 50 concerts and 100 performances will take place throughout the city. All of it is free, plus you can attend four ticketed innovation conferences, part of the week’s “Light City U.” Marvel at a floating armada of softly lit tiny boats whose movements you can manipulate with your cell phone. Hop on a series of artist-made lily pads and watch them light up with your steps. Learn from innovators the newest trends in health, creativity, sustainability and social issues.
And of course, experience it all from the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Hotel, located in the middle of all the action, right on the spell-binding harbor. Our special package includes overnight valet parking for one car and free wireless internet. Be sure to reserve your room for an inspirational celebration you don’t want to miss!
