Meet the GM: Michael Medeiros, Royal Sonesta Boston

Michael Medeiros, the General Manager of Royal Sonesta Boston, has been dedicated to his employees, guests, and hotel since he took the position in 2011. During his time with Royal Sonesta Boston, Medeiros has led a major hotel renovation that included 400 guestrooms Michael Medeiros newand 20 suites, added 2000 square feet of meeting space and 3000 square feet of a new Outdoor Terrace, Fitness and Pool area, and created Studio, the hotel’s new coffee & pastry shop showcasing the creations of the culinary team.

Medeiros got an unusual start in the hotel business, offering two weeks of free work to prove himself as a banquet waiter, despite his lack of experience. From there, Medeiros’ potential was quickly realized. He has been with Sonesta for 24 y
ears, beginning his career at the Royal Sonesta Boston, then working with Sonesta properties in Miami and New Orleans.  He was at Royal Sonesta New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 2011, he returned to his native Massachusetts as General Manager at Royal Sonesta Boston.

Known for his ‘open-door policy’ Michael embodies the Sonesta ‘culture of caring,’ encouraging staff to be the best they can be, always with an open mind of how to do things better.  Medeiros prefers to anticipate his guests’ needs before they have the chance to ask for anything, a philosophy that has contributed to his guests’ overwhelming satisfaction over the years. He also makes an outstanding effort to assure his employees feel appreciated, and begins everyday by saying hello to the team on his daily rounds.

Medeiros serves on the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Board, and is President of the Cambridge Tourism Board and Vice President of the Cambridge Hotel Association.  Under his leadership, the hotel partners with several organizations, including Access Sport American, East End House, Somerville Shelter for Battered Women, and the YWCA in Cambridge.

Medeiros was recently recognized for his exceptional character and work ethic when he was awarded the “Best General Manager” award by the Massachusetts Lodging Association (MLA). The President and CEO of the MLA, Paul Sacco, presented Medeiros with the award, which he had been nominated for by both the Royal Sonesta Boston team as well as the Cambridge Office for Tourism. “Michael is active in the community and leads the hotel with energy, creativity and compassion,” said Sacco. “Michael demonstrates superior professionalism and is a leader in the hospitality industry.”

Reflecting on his time spent with Sonesta, Medeiros commented on the challenges facing a General Manager, saying that his biggest is, “Pushing the service levels with the associates to match the new clientele and understanding that we have a superior product after our extensive renovation.” However, no matter what challenges come his way, Medeiros remains committed to providing everyone involved with the exceptional experience that Sonesta has come to be known for.

  1. I have been trying to purchase a gift certificate for two weeks now through your sales department. I have been given the run around. It’s hard to believe that this has become so difficult! It is supposed to be a gift! Please help.
