On the weekend of April 8, the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta partnered with the Harlem Legends, comprised of retired Harlem Globetrotters and other athletes, to raise money for the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation (MDYF). Douglas – the former Globetrotter, not the actor – founded the organization to provide positive and educational activities for youth and communities around the globe.
Douglas established the Harlem Legends and MDYF to send a message of teamwork and success to young people and to encourage them to stay fit, build up their self-esteem and confidence, handle peer pressure and stay away from drugs and gangs. Sonesta was thrilled to welcome Douglas and other members of MDYF for a weekend gala to celebrate the organization’s 25th anniversary. The evening featured dinner, an award ceremony, live music and well-deserved recognition for the tireless efforts (and dazzling basketball skills!) of Douglas and his selfless organization.
The next day, those skills were on full display at the Rhodes Jordan Recreational Center in nearby Lawrenceville when basketball legends and local community figures got together for a scrimmage game that included lots of fun and laughter. A video clip from the game shows the Globetrotters up to their mischievous tricks as Michael Douglas becomes obsessed with the socks of Sonesta’s General Manager David Kohlasch. The weekend also included a basketball clinic for local youth that fostered teamwork and, as Douglas likes to say, “keeping a positive attitude above the rim.”
Sonesta wishes the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation a hearty “Congratulations” on 25 years!
