For some of today’s kids and adults, the most powerful doorway to education is through the arts. That’s why Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria is proud to support MECA, Multicultural Education through Culture and Arts. This local charity educates youngsters in the arts and culture with an eye toward healthy development.

MECA is a community non-profit organization and Latino cultural center that’s been providing culturally based arts education programs for 40 years. Its services primarily focus on at-risk youth with limited resources and low academic expectations. During in-school, after-school and Summer arts programs, they offer support services and community building initiatives and encourage academic excellence.

MECA’s philosophy is one of engagement; underpinning their array of programs are annual multicultural artistic performances and events for more than 4,000 students, developing discipline, self-esteem and cultural pride in every participant while instilling a sense of direction. Local, national and international artists contribute their talent to MECA programs. Their work pushes the boundaries of convention and provides a fresh perspective on the role that the arts can play in today’s complex world.

MECA’s programs—from its culturally-focused workshops and teambuilding to its annual Concert Series of music, dance and theater—emphasize social justice, openness, creative expression, respect, caring and diversity. It has measurably enhanced the social health and cultural life of Houston since its founding. Sonesta could not have been more pleased to offer our support during our 2017 leadership conference.
