Matt Walsh, General Manager of Sonesta ES Suites Brunswick Princeton, upholds our values every day by giving his guests a surprisingly different way to stay. Everyday when he arrives at his hotel, Matt rallies his employees together, providing them with the motivation and encouragement they need to go above and beyond for their guests – and it doesn’t go unnoticed. In recognition of his hard work and dedication to Sonesta, we caught up with Matt to ask him a few questions about his professional and personal life to give Sonesta guests across the country the opportunity to get to know him better.

Q: What do you like most about working within and leading a hotel?

A: I like coaching the younger staff and developing them for their career progression.  I understand that much of the staff will eventually move on from the hotel to pursue other opportunities, but if I have instilled in them a strong work ethic and a sense of professionalism, then I have done my job.

Q: During your time with Sonesta – what role have you enjoyed most?

A: Now, being a veteran GM, is most enjoyable.  When Sonesta gave me the opportunity to be a first time GM 5 years ago, I second-guessed many of my decisions, wondering if I was making the correct choice.  Through experience, I now trust that every decision I make has the company’s best interest in mind.

Q: What has been your most successful everyday surprise?

A: For National Grilled Cheese Day, I brought my own griddle from home and made the staff grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.  My Director of Sales ate 3 sandwiches.

Q: If you weren’t a hotelier, what would you be?

A: Nine years ago I applied for my dream job to sell craft beer to bars and restaurants.  They ultimately passed, I applied at a hotel, and the rest is history.

Q: What do you enjoy most about living in the local area?

A: You can’t beat a 20 minute commute.  Living so close to the hotel means that I have more time each day to spend with my wife and kids.

Q: Name your favorite place to visit — any destination in the world.

A: Hawaii.  Perfect weather, amazing scenery, and everyone is so nice.  I’ve been there three times but can’t wait to go again.

Q: Name three items you absolutely do not travel without.

A: Phones, wallet, and my sunglasses.

Q: What is something your guests would be surprised to know about you?

A: I do all of the grocery shopping and all of the cooking for my family.
