The airport is open and planes are flying. The Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa and the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort are repaired, as bright and welcoming as ever, and newly reinforced with storm-resistance structural enhancements. We are delighted to report that Sonesta is once again open for reservations on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.

We are grateful for the support from our guests over the past year. Though Hurricane Irma dealt us a heavy blow, we are re-opening stronger and brand new. We look forward to extending you a warm island welcome!

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort, Opening December 15, 2018.

The Sonesta Ocean Point Resort fared the storm better than its sister property, thanks to the renovation that was completed in 2015. Still, the building is also getting a makeover focused on resisting strong storms. Like the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa, it is also getting a contemporary new look as well as an exciting addition—Casa Blue, a Spanish-style tapas eatery on the rooftop above Azul restaurant.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa, Opening February  1, 2019.

Our guests have long loved the family-friendly charms and wide array of restaurants and kids’ activities at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa. And all those things, and more, will return. We will be sporting a new look, too: contemporary, clean, and airy spaces that embody the welcoming spirit of the Caribbean.

The resort’s Sky Tower, after sustaining major damage, is undergoing reconstruction, incorporating a storm-resistant frame that can withstand winds of 200 mph (Irma’s winds were 165 mph) and resist severe earthquakes. And while we’re at it, we’re reducing the carbon footprint, increasing energy efficiency, and improving fire resistance.

Maho Village, Continually Reopening

If you have stayed with us on St. Maarten before, you know that Maho Village is an integral part of the experience. Just steps from the resorts, the village is brimming with shops, restaurants, and the Casino Royale, the largest gaming emporium on the island. Some venues are open in the village and businesses will continue to open as they are ready. What’s more, the village as a whole is undergoing a massive transformation and is expected to re-open completely in Summer 2019.

Hospitality First, Supporting Sonesta Employees

Sonesta is proud to partner locally with the Maho Group which manages the resorts and who, with other travel industry operators on the island, launched Hospitality First, an academic initiative of the St. Maarten Training Foundation. This groundbreaking organization helped to ensure that the dedicated staff of Sonesta remained employed after Hurricane Irma. Further, they were given opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge in the hospitality industry during reconstruction. Each and every employee will return to Sonesta to welcome you. This incredible program was made possible by a grant of about $4.5 million from the governments of The Netherlands and St. Maarten.
