Meet the GM: Euan Taylor of the Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel

Another month means it’s time for another Meet the GM column. This month, we’re getting to know Euan Taylor, General Manager of the new Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel. Check out our Q&A below!

Q: What do you like most about working within and leading a hotel?

A: I enjoy the variety a hotel offers. Running a business that provides hospitality and great service is a natural fit and worthwhile endeavor. I enjoy the different people you work with around the operation, and the balance between creative work, financials, and striving for improvement.

Q: During your brief time with Sonesta – what role/opportunity have you enjoyed or do you look forward to most?

A: Other than being on the floor around operations, I enjoy the departmental meetings. In these I can share the service vision for the property, and be a coach for the team. The meetings can be challenging, though I see it as a process and over time will build trust and help individuals get more enjoyment and reward from their working day.

Q: In your opinion, what has been your hotel’s most successful Amazing Moment?

A: We had strong service scores in April, the best Trip Advisor score in the last 20 months. So something worked well, and I like to think it is the team’s cohesion, how we worked collaboratively to be more engaging and friendly to the guest and each other.

Q: If you weren’t a hotelier, what would you be?

A: I love animals and nature having grown up around farms. I did not get the results at school to be a Vet, although I wanted to go into some sort of caregiving work. I looked at social services at one time, and have found hospitality to be a lot about community so I find that satisfying.

Q: As a native, what do you enjoy most about living in San Francisco?

A: This is a great area as it combines national park and city. We have a big park just north of the Golden Gate bridge, and a lot to in the city and in between. San Francisco is one of the largest harbors on the west coast so we have a large sailing community in the area.

Q: Name your favorite place to visit — any destination in the world.

A: I enjoy travel so there are many areas that I like to visit, getting over to Europe for contrasting cultures and flavors is a pleasure. Although I look forward to coming home to the Bay Area and settling into routines.

Q: Name three items you absolutely do not travel without.

A: My iPhone, – travel is so much easier with all the information needed accessible in one place. I make lists before I travel to make sure I do not forget items such as a phone charger, and that pair of swim shorts for the hotel pool. My advice is to leave additional time and wake earlier if needed so that getting to the airport is not rushed and travel can be more relaxed.

Q: What is something your guests would be surprised to know about you?

A: I got to race with the French Team NRG in the Louis Vuitton 2013 Sailing Cup, it was a thrill to host their training camp at the hotel and take the team hiking with my Border Collies. They had great camaraderie and interchanged responsibility on the boat pre-race, something I took back to land.

During your stay at the luxurious new Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel, be sure to say a friendly “hello” when you see Euan Taylor, a great new addition to our Sonesta family!
