Today we meet Darin Stearns, Assistant General Manager at Sonesta ES Suites Minneapolis – St. Paul Airport.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping people and making guests feel like they are part of my family while staying at the Sonesta ES Minneapolis – St. Paul Airport. I enjoy taking care of guests and its genuine because I love the hospitality industry. It makes me happy when I make others happy. My job allows me to meet so many different and fascinating people from all around the world and tend to their needs. It’s a FAMILY.
What would surprise others about your job?
The change in dynamics of not only working for the full service Royal Sonesta for 18 years but moving to the Sonesta ES Suites side during a major pandemic where the Assistant Manager does a little bit of everything. I think its great because it makes me learn all aspects of the hotel in every department. You are literally hands-on in every department as AGM, especially during a pandemic and being short staffed.
What are the skills needed to be successful as an AGM?
You must be adaptable to change and always be willing to accept the good and the bad. There’s always something new happening and to be a successful AGM you must realize that you do not – and will never – know everything, but must be eager to learn and do more at all times. You have to wear different hats and do different tasks at all times to make the team successful. You must be “hands on” and be there for your for your team. A team builder and leader that has SONESTA with a PASSION.
What makes your experience surprisingly different at Sonesta ES Suites?
What makes my experience surprising different at Sonesta ES Suites is that guests stay for long periods of time, sometimes months, if not for a year at a time. You really get to know them personally, to the point of being a family. There is bonding because of the length of stay and assisting them for months. You get to know them on a personal level because Sonesta ES is like a “home” and home is where literally the HEART is because we care about and love our associates and guests.
