Welcome to the latest post in our Meet the GM series! Today we travel to Sonesta ES Suites Omaha to meet the hotel’s general manager, Josh Haber. Read on to learn about Josh’s hospitality background and his work at the hotel.
Q: What do you like most about working within and leading hotels?
I enjoy how each and every day is different. It truly helps to build character and experience when you’re in an industry where you can expect new challenges every day.
Q: Since joining Sonesta ES Suites – what opportunity have you enjoyed the most or what has made the biggest impression?
Since joining this company I have had the privilege of working with some of most talented, hard- working individuals I have come across in my career. The culture of caring and the sincerity of the company’s core values is not something I take for granted. The desire of my staff to always improve, learn from their mistakes, and truly work as a team is something that has been great to be a part of.
Q: In your opinion, what has been your hotel’s most successful Everyday Surprise?
Due to the current climate, it has been challenging to “bring people together” physically, so we have had to get creative in our Everyday Surprises. It can be something as simple as the staff picking who will win sports games, and inviting guests to participate just for fun.
Q: If you weren’t a hotelier, what would you be?
The manager of the New York Mets.
Q: What do you enjoy most about living in Omaha?
Coming from big cities such as New York and Chicago, Omaha has brought a sense of peace into my life, while still offering some of the benefits of living in a big city such as good places to eat, museums, and the zoo. But it has been a great place to raise a family and my wife and I are very happy in the community we live in.
Q: Name your favorite place to visit — any destination in the world.
Anywhere in Italy!
Q: Name three items you absolutely do not travel without.
Headphones, iPad (or any other means to watch movies), and my Mets hat.
Q: What is something your guests would be surprised to know about you?
Before I was in hotels, I managed a Ruth’s Chris Steak house in downtown Chicago for several years, which is where I gained most of my management experience.
