From Guest to General Manager

Childhood experiences can have a huge impact on who we become as adults and on the career paths we pursue. Sonesta ES Suites Dublin Columbus General Manager Michael O’Malley was certainly influenced by a hotel stay from his youth! Michael was recently going through some old family photos, prompting him to share with our team his experience as a guest at the hotel in 1994 and how it sparked his interest in a career in hospitality.

Read on to learn about Michael’s experience and how he’s come full circle from hotel guest to general manager.

In 1994 our family house in Dublin caught fire and we had to live in a hotel for 3 months while it was repaired.  It happen to be the Residence Inn Dublin, which is now the Sonesta ES Suites Dublin.  I was 15 years old and can remember walking the property, meeting the staff and talking with the GM and thought this would be fun to do one day, to be a GM and run a hotel.  Several years later I graduated high school, started college and also started working for another hotel in Dublin while going to school.  At the same time my mom took a part time job at the Residence Inn Dublin for a year.  As I worked in the hospitality field I started as a Guest service agent and made my way up to General Manager.  I opened hotels and was a GM at numerous hotels but in 2016, 22 years after staying at this hotel and thinking how fun it would be to run a hotel, I was given the opportunity to manage the Sonesta ES Suites Dublin.  Back to where my mind first went to hospitality! “

About the photos

The top right corner is me hiding from my brother and cousin next to our 2 bedroom suite windows.  Bottom left is my brother, cousin and I playing basketball on the sports court.  It’s funny to see pictures of the property then compared to now.  All the trees and bushes were so little and the color scheme was so “90s”, haha!
