Over the past few months, we have had the joy of welcoming new destinations, new hotel teams, and even new brands to the Sonesta family. One of those brands is Sonesta Select, and today, for the latest in our Meet the GM series, we are excited to introduce you to Karen Votta, General Manager of Sonesta Select Foxborough-Mansfield. Read below to learn about Karen’s background and her love of the New England area. The next time you plan to see a New England Patriots game, be sure to #StaySonesta in the Foxborough area!
Q: What do you like most about working within and leading hotels?
I love being a mentor and watching all my past employees become successful in their careers. Even if they do not end up in the hospitality industry, I have been told that I made a difference by many. Nothing makes me prouder than to see others succeed knowing that I was a part of it. In addition, I love being a GM mentor for my sister properties. I try to help everyone in any way possible and keep them all laughing each day. ?
Q: Since joining Sonesta Select Foxboro-Mansfield – what opportunity have you enjoyed the most or what has made the biggest impression?
I have only been with Sonesta for 2 months but during that time I have truly enjoyed working for a smaller company. My hotel is only a few miles from the corporate office and getting to personally meet some senior leadership in both the engineering, training and communication departments has been great. Even in the short time with Sonesta, I feel as if my opinions and voice are heard. They understand that as General Managers we have a lot of hospitality knowledge to offer. Being a role model and furthering my hospitality career for Sonesta is my goal!
Q: In your opinion, what has been your hotel’s most successful Amazing Moment?
Being with Sonesta for only two months I can truly say that watching my team successfully transition from Marriott to Sonesta was an amazing moment. Many employees, me included were with Marriott for 10-30 years. Although it was scary at times my team always remained positive and excited! They embraced all the changes and even helped me remain positive during some difficult times. I have the best team and look forward to the future!
Q: If you weren’t a hotelier, what would you be?
With law enforcement in my family, I always had interest in detective work but never pursued it. Food and cooking are also passions of mine and although I hate being on camera, I secretly want to be the Next Food Network Star!
Q: What do you enjoy most about living in Southeastern MA?
I love that I can experience all 4 seasons. (and yes, even SNOW!) Although I love the beach, fall is my favorite season of them all. Being from New England (Boston area) I love everything sports! Each season brings a different sport that I enjoy. My hotel is 6 miles from Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play so football in the fall is my favorite!
Q: Name your favorite place to visit — any destination in the world.
Abroad- I went to Italy 5 years ago and I would love to go back to visit some areas I did not get a chance to see. Greece is also on my bucket list. Locally– I love sitting on the beach all day but especially between the hours of 5pm-8pm!
Q: Name three items you absolutely do not travel without.
Camera, sunscreen and someone fun to share the experience! (they must love to laugh!)
Q: What is something your guests would be surprised to know about you?
I attended a women’s football clinic with Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots and did drills with him. I also kicked a 15-yard field goal at Gillette Stadium. (it is much harder than it looks!)
