Sonesta has a long history of connection to art, artists, and creativity. Our hotels are as individual as our guests, and throughout our company’s storied hospitality history, our hotels have been adorned with unique works of art, from community art installations to the works of famed artists like Andy Warhol. As our portfolio grows, our commitment to the arts and memorable aesthetics continues, most recently in the form of a collaboration between Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown and Indiewalls.
Situated on Wacker Drive between the famous State Street and Michigan Avenue, the Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown guest rooms and public spaces were refreshed as part of large-scale interior renovations at this luxury hotel in the heart of Chicago. The newly re:imagined hotel comes to life with artwork curated by the New York-based art consultancy Indiewalls.
Layered with pops of color and nods to classical architecture, the recently renovated interiors at Royal Sonesta Chicago evoke the coziness of a living room in the center of a bustling urban environment. The various works in the hotel’s public areas, corridors, and guest rooms inspire, offering a relaxed elegance and layered visual narrative that works in tandem with the distinctive and modern interiors by Gettys Group.
With artwork that ranges from textile wall hangings to photography, the aesthetic curation shies away from obvious references to the Windy City, instead inserting a feeling of warm ambiguity into the space. Through the diverse range of styles that one might find in a residence, the artist’s hand is present in the array of subjects and substrates present on-site.
The curator of the artwork, Alsace Patrone, shared the following:
“Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown was a uniquely creative property with a playful eye towards its art collection. The artwork was curated to evoke the kind of eclectic mix of work one might find in a native Chicagoan’s home – incorporating a mix of styles, subjects and mediums, as well as subtle nods to the city. The work is cheeky, and developed with a focus on representing the city both with abstracted local references (note the Lincoln Park Zoo gorilla in the lobby) and a dedication to showcasing the work of local artists.”
