unnamedWith more than 29 years spent in the hotel industry, it seems as if John Dallas, General Manager of Sonesta Bee Cave Austin, was born to work in hospitality. His career started with a position as a desk clerk in 1984, which he worked while attending the University of Texas. “I ended up loving the business so much that I made a career of it,” John said.

Before coming to Sonesta, John worked for a number of hotel companies – both big and small – including Marriott International, White Lodging, Interstate Hotels and Resorts, JHM Hotels, and McKibbon Hotel Management. However, due to his love of his alma mater – which he calls “the greatest university on Earth” – John’s position as a GM in Austin is clearly the best fit. “Living in Austin allows me to attend University of Texas events and to volunteer and spend some time on the UT campus. For the past three semesters, I have helped with a business mentoring program at the McCombs School of Business for UT sophomore students,” John said.

In addition to its prime location, John loves working at Sonesta Bee Cave Austin because of the hotel itself and being ingrained in the local community. He says the most spectacular part of the hotel is its rooftop bar and lounge, the Meridian 98. “The view from the sixth floor is beautiful and it’s a great place to share a plate and stories with guests and locals,” he said.

If you ask John what he enjoys most about his position with Sonesta, you may get one of two answers. First, John is particularly invested in his team, and enjoys developing leaders throughout every level of the hospitality industry. Secondly, “I enjoy working in hotels because of the messiness of life in general. The gratification of helping guests and employees with their needs and problems is what keeps [me] going every day,” John said. Indeed, when you combine John’s passion for serving others with his love of the great state of Texas, it seems that there’s no better place he could be.

When he’s not busy creating an exceptional experience for his guests and staff alike, you may find John traveling to Northern California, especially the Monterey and Carmel areas, where he lived for nine years. No matter where he’s traveling, however, you’ll never find John without Google maps, USB charging bars for his devices, and a neck pillow for comfort.

If you ever find yourself staying at the beautiful Sonesta Bee Cave Austin, be sure to stop by and say a quick “hello” to General Manager John Dallas. It won’t take more than a minute’s conversation to realize why he is such a treasured member of our Sonesta family.
