The Culture of Caring: Food for Thought

Helping to feed the under-served is a year-round national endeavor. In July, Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta, Sonesta ES Suites Gwinnet Place Atlanta, Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria, and Sonesta ES Suites Houston Galleria did their part to provide food to their fellow citizens, making their cities a bit less hungry.

On July 30 in Houston, employees donned the hats of “hunger fighters” and headed over to the Houston Food Bank. This long-heralded organization presents solutions to both hunger and food waste. Each year, it distributes 122 million nutritious meals through a network of 1,500 community partners in southeast Texas, feeding 800,000 individuals. The Food Bank coordinates multiple programs to not only feed people of all ages who need support, but also to educate them about nutrition, connect them to other services, provide emergency relief during unexpected life events, and more. During their visit, Sonesta employees sliced fruit, sorted food, packaged meals, and helped with other tasks. In all, they helped to provide 11,886 meals!

On July 18 in Atlanta, the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta hosted the Georgia Business Travel Association (BTA) for their Community Service Day. Each year, the BTA partners with Action Ministries for “Snack-A-Palooza,” a Smart Lunch/Smart Kid program that serves kids who don’t have access to school lunches during the summer months. The

program’s volunteers deliver the food right to the kids’ neighborhoods. Since 2012, they have served over 500,000 healthy lunches. Naturally, Sonesta jumped right into the action, helping to assemble Snack Packs with juice boxes, fruit cups, granola bars and more. The team put together about 15,000 packs!
